Fall Out Boy – Band Profile

Fall Out Boy

The Simpsons have a lot to answer for. Not only have they brought comedy joy to millions and millions of people, they are also responsible for Fall Out Boy’s name. The band are named after Springfield Superhero Radioactive Man’s sidekick.

Not only did Fall Out Boy (the band, not the cartoon character!) perform at Live Earth, they also have their own clothing line, performed with Timbaland and courted controversy by taking chimpanzees to the Kerrang Awards. Could Fall Out Boy be the biggest emo band at the moment?

Fall Out Boy come from Wilmette, Illinois and consist of Patrick Stump (Guitar, Vocals), Pete Wentz (Bass), Joe Trohman (Guitar) and Andrew Hurley (Drums). Initially they had all been involved in more angry, more politicised hardcore bands, but decided that they would have to soften their image in order to hit the big time. Although their punk leanings are evident in the songs they sing, they are slightly more melodic and poppy.

In 2002, the band released the Split EP and in 2003 an LP called Fall Out Boy’s evening out with your girlfriend. This incarnation`of Fall Out Boy consisted of Trohman, Wentz, Stump and two other musicians. After these were released, Hurley joined the group and the other two musicians left.

In 2003, the band signed to the cult record label Fueled by Ramen and released their first album, Take this to your grave. Although it achieve mainstream success straight away, it did receive local acclaim. This was followed by EP My Heart will always be the B-side to my Tongue in 2004.

In 2005 the band released their album Under the Cork Tree, under Island Records. Despite achieving commercial success, the album content was still quite controversial – song Seven Minutes in Heaven was about a attempted suicide attempt by Wentz. Sugar We’re goin’ down and Dance Dance were also released off this album.

In 2007 the band released Infinity on High – with the highly political This ain’t a scene, it’s an arms race being the first single. It debuted at number 2 in the UK singles chart making it their most successful song to date.
