It’s that time of year again… On the 20th of February Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne will host the annual music award at Earl’s Court. Many people criticise the Brit’s for awarding popularity over innovation, but it is a good night of entertainment and you’re always guaranteed a good punch up or two!
The Artic Monkeys and The Killers were the big winners last year, but who will walk alway with the statues this year and who will be crying into their champagne. Here are the nominations, and my tips for who might win. If you want to have a flutter and you win…. don’t forget to buy me a drink!
British Group: Artic Monkeys, Editors, Girls Aloud, Kaiser Chiefs, Take That.
A mish-mash of groups this year battling for one of the biggest awards of the night. Hopefully the incredibily over-rated Artic Monkeys will lost out to the Editors, whose End Has a Start is pure musical poetry and makes me think of something Joy Division could have written.
British male solo artist: Jamie T, Mark Ronson, Mika, Newton Faulkner, Richard Hawley
I have a soft spot for the Sheffield based songwriter Richard Hawley, but I predict that Mika will walk away with the prize. Sure he’s camp, sure he’s cheesy, but Grace Kelly was one of the top songs of 2006.
British female solo artist: Bat For Lashes, Kate Nash, KT Tunstall, Leona Lewis, PJ Harvey
One thing that always makes me giggle a bit – PJ Harvey always gets nominated but never seems to win anything. I can’t decide if KT Tunstall or Kate Nash will win, but Bat for Lashes might have a good outside chance with her bizarre but beautiful debut album Fur on Gold.
British album: Arctic Monkeys – Favourite Worst Nightmare, Leona Lewis – Spirit, Mark Ronson – Version, Mika – Life In Cartoon Motion, Take That – Beautiful World
Take That have been given four nominations this year, one for each member (Poor Robbie must be gutted). Despite their mosr recent album being as old as the hills, I have a strong feeling it could win this category.
British single: Leona Lewis – Bleeding Love, Mika – Grace Kelly, Take That – Shine, Kaiser Chiefs – Ruby, Sugababes – About You Now, Mark Ronson Ft Amy Winehouse – Valerie, Kate Nash – Foundations, The Hoosiers – Worried About Ray, James Blunt – 1973, Mutya Buena – Real Girl
British Single is one of the biggies, as this is chosen by the great British public. All these songs are good ones and stand a chance, although I feel that Valerie will be the winner. I just hope that there’s not an open bar if Amy Winehouse is planning on attending.
British Breakthrough: Bat For Lashes, Kate Nash, Klaxons, Leona Lewis, Mika
As they walked away with the Mercury Music prize in September, the Klaxons could stand a good chance – although I personally find their “nu-rave” music annoying as heck. Again I hope Bat for Lashes does it, although it will probably be someone more radio-friendly like Mika or Leona Lewis.
British live act: Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs, Klaxons, Muse, Take That
Similar to PJ Harvey, Muse are always nominated in this category but never win. They’re pretty good live, so why don’t they give them the award? The Kaiser Chiefs were amazing though on their last tour so hopefully they’ll get a nod.
International male solo artist: Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West, Michael Buble, Rufus Wainwright, Timbaland
An eclectic mix of musicians in this category – Kanye West should get it though, not only for a brilliant album, but for outselling 50 Cent and subsequently showing him up.
International female solo artist: Alicia Keys, Bjork, Feist, Kylie Minogue, Rhianna
No contest – it will be Rhianna, for the sole reason that she was number one for about 50 million weeks in the summer. Stranger things have happened at the Brits before though!
International group: Arcade Fire, The Eagles, Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, The White Stripes
The Eagles? I’m quite surprised they got nominated for this award considering that the average Brit Award viewer has never heard of them. I think that Arcade Fire might get this one though. They’re not overly popular over here, but they put on amazing shows and are absolutely bonkers to boot.
International album: Arcade Fire – Neon Bible, The Eagles – Long Road Out of Eden, Foo Fighters – Echoes Silence Patience & Grace, Kings of Leon – Because of the Times, Kylie Minogue – X
This is always a tricky one to predict, and I must admit that there are some albums that I thought would be on this list which aren’t. I think this one could go to the Foo Fighters though.
Outstanding contribution to music: Sir Paul McCartney
I think Paul McCartney might get this one. Considering that he’s the only guy in the running and all!
