I’ve got to admit that I’ve not been a big fan of the White Stripe’s most recent album, Icky Thump. The singles from it so far have not been up to the usual catchy standards that Jack and Meg have released in the past and therefore I listened to Conquest with some trepidation.
However I really liked this song. Originally written in the 1950s, it’s been given a makeover by the Detroit Duo with lots of horns, heavy guitar riffs and strong vocals.
The video, with its Matador theme is pretty darn funky too. I can imagine it getting really annoying after a while, but otherwise it’s a really good chunk of retro rock.
I think this song is a lot like marmite; you will either love it or hate it. Although I’m a fan, I played it to a friend and afterwards she looked at me like Lindsay Lohan had just come and puked in her handbag. Which I’m guessing is a bad thing.
The White Stripes have had six albums: The White Stripes (1999), De Stijl (2000), White Blood Cells (2001), Elephant (2003), Get Behind Me Satan (2005), and the latest Icky Thump (2007).
