MGMT - Time to Pretend - Single Review

March 26th, 2008 by Indiemonkey

New York duo MGMT are one to watch in 2008 and their first full length album Oracular Spectacular has already gained critical acclaim. Time to Pretend is the first single to be released.

Time to Pretend made me think of the Polyphonic Spree on a bit of a bender. The vocals are very pensive (and like all good rock songs, are about drugs) whilst the music is happy and cheery, with drum crashes and synth aplenty. A bit of a mismatch perhaps, but the song works really well, and I couldn’t get it out of my head for ages.

Go buy the album. Go on. You know you want to!

Panic at the Disco - Pretty Odd - Album Review

March 25th, 2008 by Indiemonkey

Panic At The Disco - Pretty Odd

Yes, it’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Sound the trumpets, bang the drums, roll out the red carpet… Panic at the Disco have released their much anticipated second album! They’ve dropped the superfluous exclamation mark from their name, but is this all that has changed since the previous album?

Pretty Odd has a very sixties vibe to it - but as the band insist in opening track we’re so Starving - “We’re still the same”. Current single Nine in the Afternoon sounds like it could have been a hidden track on Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I have Friends in Holy Spaces sounds very vaudeville and sounds different to anything the band have ever done. Northern Downpour is a very pretty song with thoughtful lyrics whilst Pas De Cheval is rocky with a catchy drumbeat. Mad as Rabbits is probably the song most like “old” PATD whilst Folkin’ Around is surprisingly…. a tune with folk influences.

This is truly a mixed bag of tunes and you’d think it wouldn’t work… but surprisingly it does, and really well at that. I’d even say that it’s even better than their first album. Definitely one to buy, borrow or steal off your mates.

Panic at the Disco have had two albums - A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out (2005) and Pretty Odd (2008).

Slipknot - Band Profile

March 23rd, 2008 by Indiemonkey

Slipknot

Slipknot are a band that you either love or hate - but you can’t deny that they are one of a kind. With frantic stage shows, band member in masks and boiler suits and three drummers playing different beats - they are awesome live and have brought out tons of songs you can always mosh to!

Slipknot are from Des Moines in Iowa and are Nu-metal. They formed in 1995 and started out writing and playing songs in a basement. They were initially known as Pyg System, but decided to name themselves Slipknot, after their one of the first songs they wrote (a couple of years later they ran into trouble with a knitting magazine with the same name!)

They have had many members of the group (one of which became a Christian and decided that he couldn’t be in the band anymore) but the current membership of the group hasn’t changed since 1999: Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Paul Gray, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson and Corey Taylor. Instead of using their names in the band, each person is known by a number ranging from 0-8 and is recognised by a specific mask that they wear.

In 1999 the band released their debut album Slipknot which was acclaimed for its intensity and brute force. Their second album Iowa was released in 2001. By then the band had built up a strong base of fans - who were known as maggots.

In 2004 the band released Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses). Their fourth album will be released in August 2008… Other Clothing can’t wait to hear it!!

As there are many members of Slipknot, there are also many side projects. Corey Taylor and Jim Root were in a band called Stone Sour before they joined Slipknot whilst Joey Jordison was in the Murderdolls. Jordison also stood in for Lars Ulrich when Metallica played Download in 2004.

Slipknot Clothing

Due to their huge following the band has a lot of merchandise with clothing for Men and Women.
