A couple of years ago, the Futureheads became the most famous band to come out of Sunderland - with their signature track being a cover of Kate Bush track Hounds of Love. However, their career began to falter and they became the second most famous band to come out of Sunderland after Maccam rockers Maximo Park.
However, the band are now back with a new track from their third album, and I’ve got to admit that it’s pretty kick-ass. The Beginning of the twist is a rockin’ three-and-a-half-minute stomper which shows that the guys are back on form. It isn’t as arty or complex as a lot of their previous stuff, but this certainly isn’t a bad thing. Fingers crossed that the rest of the new album is just as brilliant!
The Futureheads have had three albums - The Futureheads (2004), News and Tributes (2006) and This is Not the World (due to be released May 2008)
Get Cape Wear Cape Fly is the alias of British singer/songwriter Sam Duckworth. Searching for the Hows and Whys is his most recent album, and seeing as his influences range from Billy Bragg to Nitin Sawney to Blur, you can be guaranteed that this album is an eclectic mix of sounds.
Opening track Let The Journey Begin is a summery sounding tune with crisp lyrics and soaring violins whilst Young and Lovestruck is a pensive song with a bouncy chorus. Window of Your Mind mixes a dancey backing track with an acoustic guitar whilst I Could Build You a Tower is the album’s protest song - a tune about peace, love and understanding. Better Things features Cockney songtress Kate Nash, and although it isn’t the best song on the album, it’s still very pleasant. Closing tune Could’ve Seen It All rounds off the album perfectly and I could even see it as a future single.
All in all this album is awesome - each song is different to the others and somehow the album still flows really well. Sam Duckworth is definitely one to watch and I’ll be watching his musical career very closely from now on!
I know Indiemonkey is the music reviewer, but I’m sure she won’t mind me posting this, as I think this is the best vid to be released so far this year.
Having seen Utah Saints in the middle of a boggy field at York many years ago, I was suprised to hear the haunting sounds of Kate Bush once more on MTV, and the vid is excellent.
Acclaimed Manchester band Elbow are back with their fourth album. Elbow have been one of those bands I’ve always wanted to get into but never got round to, so I was really keen to have a listen to this album.
Opening track Starlings admittedly didn’t work for me, it was a little boring and over the place, although Guy Garvey has a lovely, very emotive voice. The Bones of You is a much better tune, with a very Latin vibe to it. Current single Grounds for Divorce reminded me a bit of Beck, and with it’s Woaaaaahs and Aaaaaahs is extremely catchy. Weather to Fly is a very chilled out, relaxed track, although I couldn’t really get into The Fix. Closing track Friend Of Ours is a very ethereal tune, with plinky plonky pianos and whispered vocals.
This album is a mixed bag - some tracks work well, whilst some don’t. If you don’t want to buy the album though, definitely download Grounds For Divorce, as it’s a really good song!
