Another week, and another singer-songwriter is chomping at the bit, ready to try and set the charts alight. Duffy is the latest one, and with her debut single already at number one in the charts - is set to be one of the next big things.
What about the song itself? Mercy is a sultry ballad, with an awesome Northern Soul vibe to it (check out the video with the frantic dancing). Duffy’s singing isn’t great, and it gets a bit screechy at times - but all in all this is a solid song which will probably get a lot of airplay in clubs up and down the country.
Duffy’s debut album Rockferry is out the 3rd March 2008.
Biffy Clyro are a Scottish threesome who have been on the go since 1995.
Who’s got a match is probably the band’s most commercial single to date - whether this is a good thing or not is ultimately up to the record buying public but I must admit that I really liked this song.
After listening, the song just sits in your brain for days and days afterwards, the chorus is catchy and the lyrics and clear and clever. ‘Mon the Biffy!
American rock band Louis XIV are back with their third album - and it has a decidedly eclectic and retro twang to it.
Free Won’t be what it Used to Be is led by guitars and muffled vocals whilst There’s a Traitor in this room sounds very psychedelic. Guilt By Association smacks of electro whilst Hopesick is a lush nine-minute-long indie ballad with pianos and strings a-plenty.
If you’re not a big fan of sleazy rock then Louis XIV won’t be for you. However, if you like your music full of thumping basslines and your lyrics crammed full of double entendres then you might want to buy this album.
