Vampire Weekend are a New York band who draw influences from not only rock and indie, bit also classical and African music. Will this eclectic musical mix be evident on their first album?
The great thing about this album is that it’s very innovative and if these songs don’t have you jumping up and down then you must be clinically dead. Particular gems include the short-but-sweet Mansard Roof, the Ska-tinged A-Punk and the simple lyrics of Bryn.
Vampire Weekend are an acquired taste - you’ll either love their franctic rhythms or you’ll not. Some of the songs work a little bit better than others (The Kids Dont Stand a Chance is the rare weak link) but this is a brave album which deserves all the acclaim you can throw at it.

Cockney Sparra Adele has been touted as the next Winehouse/Allen/Nash (delete as approprate) and just narrowly missed out on the number one spot with her single Chasing Pavement.
Adele has now released 19, named for how old she is and it has already received critical acclaim - but does the album live up to the hype? I had to admit that I wasn’t very enamoured with Chasing Pavement - although she has a very good voice, the song itself was rather dull and lacked the spark of the female musicians she has been compared with.
There are are far better songs on the album than Chasing Pavement. Melt my heart to stone is a simple, extremely well-written song whilst Cold Shoulder has a striking resemblance to Massive Attack’s Unfinished Sympathy. Right as Rain is the most energetic song on the album with its reggae sounds whilst Hometown Glory is a good end to the album, a paean to the delights of London.
Some of the songs do blend into one another a bit but all in all this is a good album. Perhaps not as great as the critics are saying it is, but if you do like female singer-songwriters, this would be a good addition to your music collection.

Do you like rock music? British Sea Power certainly do. The Brighton foursome have released their third album, but is it any good?
Similar to their last two albums, the band have produced a quirky album which is easy to get into and has an almost ethereal sound to it. Current single Waving Flags is a particular standpoint, with its hypnotic drum beats, soothiing vocals and well-thought out lyrics. Lights out for Darker Skies is a rocking track with loud shredding guitars, whilst Atom bounces around madly and is probably the most lively song on the album.
All in it has to be noted for the chorus which beats itself into your head whilst A Trip Out has a funky sixties vibe to it. Some songs work a little bit better than others granted (Instrumental The Great Skua is a little hard to get into and We Close Our Eyes is just plain stupid), but this is a very strong album which should hopefully bring British Sea Power to the masses.
British Sea Power have released 3 albums: Decline Of British Sea Power (2003), Open Season (2005), and Do You Like Rock Music (2008).
